Should I replace my run-flat tires?

Question type: General

I'm looking forward to receiving my first a BMW and am faced with the much
heard of tire dilemma – will I be satisfied with my driving experience on run-flat
(RF) tires? Are these substitutes louder, more bumpy, too firm, is performance
lacking? Should I pony up the money and switch to traditional tires?   To
complicate things, my 2020 X3 M version also is deemed to require summer
tires – no alternatives from the factory.

To quiet my fears, I set out to uncover an answer, only to prove the adage that
there’s three sides to every story, with the truth somewhere betwixt and
between. Well, that really didn’t do it for me. I decided to call my dealership
and spoke to the service manager who put me on to the parts manager.
Unsurprisingly, he told me that I was among many who have considered
replacing RFs, BUT those who did, have somehow been disappointed with the
outcome - putting even more doubt in my mind. So, I envision spending the
money changing brand new OEM tires to all-season UHP tires.

I think you will appreciate the better ride of regular tires.

An AWD with summer tires is stupid in my opinion and it would be dangerous in snow.

Have you, or anyone reading this have had personal experience with my RF tire issue?

Did you test drive the X3 yet with the run flats? You need to compare them to make your own decision. No forum or other persons experience will be the same. The newer run flats are better than the first gen.tires. Brand of tire also matters. If the vehicle comes with RF's, run them till you need to replace then go with Non RF's, and put a compressor and patch kit in your trunk. RF usually last around 25K miles.

Thank you for your sensible answer. I totally agree that to each his own when it comes to this subjective decision. Unfortunately, I was only able to test the car on 18” snow tires. And, I’m leasing the car, so after 4 years it has to be returned with RFs that are in good shape. So you see the bind I’m finding myself in. Even by supplementing the summer tires with winter tires, I suspect that even then they won’t survive adequately by lease end. So, bite the bullet and get a stellar all-season tire, and store the OEMs until the car’s returned. Seems excessive, but that’s the territory BMW has put me in.

Is it normal to have to replace tires on a 2019 BMW X3? I’m leasing it and now at 22k miles, I’m being told I need to replace the tires? 22k miles is not a lot of miles. Please advise.
