I have a 1998 Nissan altima, I think the head is cracked. The oil is .milky and white smoke comes out of the tailpipe. Do I need to replace the head? Can I buy one from a junkyard cheap?

You won't know hat until you have it off, some cracks are visible, some are not, look between the valves as that is the most common places. If you don't see any take it to a machine shop and have it checked, if it checks good then have machined so it is flat before putting it back together.

Mating surfaces have to be very clean or the gasket won't hold.

tennisshoes is of course right on ---but just to clarify have yours checked before buying another one, and if you buy one from junkyard have it checked before installing . A cold head can have invisible cracks that when hot open up
