Can I tow a 1,200lb tent trailer w '97 Taurus wagon w newly rebuilt tran?
Read that my wagon has an 1,800lb towing capacity. Have an aluminum Palomino tent
trailer weighing 1,200lb. Have been told the rebuilt has stronger bits in it that the orig.
Would like to use the Taurus because of the economy. On the tent trailer blog some folks
say they've done it for years - others say no way. What do you folks think?
In 97 the towing capacity was only 1400 lbs in the wagon configuration, so you are really close to maxing it out. They also recommend installing an auxiliary tranny cooler and bypassing the one in the radiator due to the fact the one in the radiator is not good enough and can leak coolant into the trans fluid. I agree with the idea of a trans cooler, I have taken oil temp readings on a rig before and after cooler installs, the temp drop is quite impressive. I am surprised that the tranny shop didn't require that done, most tranny shops out here do now. The choice is yours, will the tranny shop still cover the warranty of you tow with it?
Definitely installing the bigger cooler, but didn't think to have the shop that installed the rebuilt do it. They still have it, so it's not too late. The one from the factory doesn't look very impressive. So you think it's not a great idea and I should find another tow vehicle?
Yeah that might be your best bet.
