What could be the problem?

Asked by Sep 09, 2016 at 11:51 AM about the 2002 Nissan Altima 2.5

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 2002 Nissan Altima was working fine
yesterday until i got home from the gym and
the battery and brake lights stayed on. The
dashboard lights would only flash
simultaneously and then go away. So
yesterday as I turned the corner to my
house, it began making wierd, loud noises
and soon after smoke began to come out.
What could be the problem?

Smoke out of tail pipe ? Or from under good ? If under hood. It may have something locking up like the alternator and the smoke could be the drive belt burning up

Yes, it is from under the hood. I looked at my alternator and the majority of the sound came from the belt area. If it is locked up, or not able to operate as smootly, what can i do to fix it, or should I just replace the belt and/or alternator?
