Oil

Asked by May 08, 2016 at 11:46 PM about the 2005 Nissan Xterra Off-Road

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I've had numerous expensive repairs. Last
was replacing 2 catylatic converters. This
was just a couple weeks ago. Seems when
rpm gets high and gears are turning, i hear
rattling noises. Also the oil is burning up
already. I would list my replacements but
that's neither here nor there. I absolutely
love the x. Regardless. Obviously I don't
want to keep spending money having to
take to shop. So, my question is what oil
are you guys using in these trucks? It's just
over 100,000 miles. (Yes a 2005!) would
any recommend high mileage, blend, or full
synthetic. Please let me know! And
explain... thanks. -STEVE

One problem is the car manufacturers are saying that it is normal for an engine to burn off 1 quart of oil per 1000 miles. This is due to engineers designing engines to get the required gas mileage standards put on the manufacture, as new cars come out each year. About the only thing you can do to slow up the oil burning is to run a 10w 30 conventional oil in the engine. Manufactures recommend a 5w30 synthetic oil which may be too thin for a higher engine if it is starting to burn oil. The rattle just may be in the exhaust system, a heat shield or something.
