is the fuel pump and fuel gauge two seperate parts on a 2005 nissan altima?

Asked by May 14, 2015 at 10:11 AM about the 2005 Nissan Altima 3.5 SE

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I recently changed the fuel pump after my car died while driving.  I fueled up a day later and when I filled up the tank and then turned on the car, the gauge showed it filled up only 3/4 of the tank.  A few days later my car died again and I found out that there was no gas in the tank but the fuel gauge on the dash board showed I had half a tank remaining.  The fuel pump was replaced again.  I fueled up again and filled it up and this time the gauge on the dashboard showed it was full, but I want to make sure this does not happen again.  Is the fuel pump and the fuel gauge one piece or are they two seperate pieces.

The fuel sending unit is on the side of the fuel pump assembly. I have seen them shipped with the float arm taped to the side. If the tape is not removed it will not read correctly. Remove the pump and do a visual inspection. The float arm is clipped in. It is also possible that it may have come out of the clip when it was installed.
