Burning Smell???

Asked by Nov 23, 2016 at 12:59 AM about the 2005 Nissan Altima 2.5 S

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

We just bought a used 2005 nissian altima 2.5 with
184000 miles
With the colder weather i started my car the other
day and after about 5 min i went out to my car and
it smelled like burnt rubber. When i got home i
opened the hood and to the passanger side of the
engine (where the belt is) the bottom pully was
smoking.
I can not find anywhere what this pully is.
It doesnt smoke all the time only if the car idles for
a while. It also has a almost squelish sound when
you start it but will go away after you drive it a
couple feet, and then wont start again till you turn
the engine off and then start it again.

Look at the car, the lower right pulley is the AC compressor, sounds like it is locking up, allowing the belt to ride across it. Time to replace the compressor and belt.
