1997 Ford Explorer engine light blinking
ave a 1997 Explorer and just recently had a tune up on it because sometimes it
accelerated roughly on take off. I had new plugs and wires and a new fuel filter put on. It
started and sound better but still accelerated a bit hesitant like before. Yesterday on the
way to work the check engine light popped on and started flashing and immediately the
truck started running and idling rough, the check engine light has never been on up until
this point even before the tune up. Any suggestions? I do plan to take it to have the codes
read but would like some input beforehand and I go buying catalytic converters and such.
It's easy enough with a multi meter. Check the primary and secondary resistance of the ignition coil. (the spark plug wires plug into it). Primary resistance should be 0.3 to 1.9 ohms. Secondary resistance 6.5 to 11.5 K ohns. If out, by just a little replace coil. Check coil resistance at location of purchase to make sure it is within specs. Many outlets will not allow electrical parts to be returned. I've also have had better results with Motorcraft coils.
