Sensor on the tranny could be a speed sensor. Does the speedometer work?

i dont know havent got it put all the way back together but it bolts on over the gears in the tranny if i start the car it sprays out gear oil

I said speed sensor because you said it was on the transmission. There's not much else on a manual transmission. Could it be a oil pressure sensor for the engine?

It could be the reverse lamp switch. Go to RockAuto.com and see if it looks the same. 2002 MINI COOPER 1.6L L4 : Electrical-Switch & Relay : Back Up Lamp Switch

No neutral safety switch on a manual transmission. They use a switch under the clutch pedal instead.

agree with one of tenspeeds answers i think its the reverse lamp switch based on the location you described.

there isn't a backplate on the bellhousing? this isn't quite right~ you know you could look at the schematic for the function of these two wires~

There is no vehicle speed sensor on the standard transmission! It takes readings from all 4 wheel sensors and calculates vehicle speed! Just clear codes and drive it should start to work after it gets enough information to calculate vehicle speed!
