Should there be one serpentine belt or two?

Asked by Nov 21, 2014 at 11:17 AM about the 1994 Mercury Tracer 4 Dr STD Wagon

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Mine broke and fell off when inwas driving.
Autozone insists that there should be two
belts but the diagrams I have seen online
show one and the belts they sell me just will
not fit on my car.

OK, one belt. The issue is some cars don't have power steering or A/C. You need to purchase the correct size belt. The belt also runs on the alternator and water pump. What setup do you have? A/C, P/S? Engine size -1.8L or 1.9L.? Then what brand is Autozone selling you? I can get you the part number you need. Post back here.
