Question type: Maintenance & Repair

98 Ford ranger, new battery. Lights come on bright but when I turn the key it won't fully turn over. Starts to but won't finish. Could it be the starter?

Make sure battery is fully charged and battery cables tight and not corroded. 90% it's as simple as this.

You can test the starter without removing it, by applying emergency brake, running a jumper cable directly from positive side of battery onto the positive stud on starter solenoid and with a screwdriver, short it across the starter solenoid. Keep the ignition switch in the off position so it only cranks buy won't run while you're under it.

Make sure the engine rotates freely by hand before you go any further.

I thought You said it doesn't fully turn over? So it turns over but doesn't run?

Spray some quick start in the throttle body and see if it runs for a bit. This will determine if it's fuel related
