Mercury sable serpentine belt

Why would I need to put a 98 serpentine belt on
my 97 mercury sable?

Maybe the belt broke or wore out? Sometimes the tensioner has go/no go indications on it, that means you need a new belt? The belt is stretched so far, the tensioner can't do it's job?

That is just how it was labeled, depending on your engine, the serpentine belt is the same size as engines used on mid 90's sables to 2000.

I'll never see 72 again. It seems those senior moments are becoming more frequent. lol
