Where is the thermostat locaten on a 1998 mercury villager gs

Follow the large hose from the top of the radiator back to the engine. Where the hose clamps onto the engine is the thermostat housing. Usually 2 bolts hold it on. Do NOT attempt to remove it until the engine is completely cooled off. Cooling systems operate under pressure and at temperatures around 200°F. You can be seriously injured unless you wait for the engine to cool off. HTH. -Jim
