i just got a 1999 mercury cougar 2.5 v6 and it will start fine and initially go into drive and reverse but then nothing. its an automatic, just replaced range sensor and its still doing it

The transmissions in the cougars weren't the best, I think you're looking at a rebuild. Prove me wrong and have it diagnosed by your local transmission shop.
