my maually operated back hatch door (lift gate) will not open on 2004 mountaineer

Are you saying to won't unlock? Or it won't remain up? For the lock try a graphite spray to lube and clean the lock mechanism. If it won't lift or stay up, replace the gas struts. You might get lucky and find a pair in a salvage yard cheap, but any auto parts place should carry them.
