I heard a pop and now there is a grinding noise, what could it be?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 1998 Mazda Protege LX standard
transmission. I put the car in reverse and before it
moved I heard a loud grindy pop noise. Now no
matter what gear the car is in there is a grinding/
rubbing noise. It still moves though. I don't know
what I broke on the car but if someone can help
figure it out. I already have one car down I can't
afford another right now.

Could be many things, Get the car into a garage before something fails that it doesn't move to find out what the issue is. Be it the transmission or other issue. Like you said, you can't afford to be down 2 vehicles.

That sounds like a safety issue so don't drive it until it is fixed.
