Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 98 Mazda MPV with 120000 miles on it. Water pump was just replaced. As soon as the engine is cranked on the engine temp gauge shoots from low to beyond high and remains there. When the engine is turned off it drops all the way back down.  No visible leaks in the coolant system.
