When we drive our ford explorer the lights seem to pulse bright and dim

Get the voltage checked from your alternator, sounds like the internal regulator may be getting ready to go bye bye. Continued driving could result in a lot of lamp replacements and could harm electronics ie ECM Stereo, etc.
