Mystery button and lever by filler neck.

Asked by Feb 25, 2015 at 04:14 PM about the 2004 Mazda MAZDA6 4 Dr s Wagon

Question type: General

When I put gas in my 2004 Mazda 6, I noticed outside the filler neck there is a skinny button as well as a 2 to 3 inch lever.  Both move and I have no idea what purpose they serve.  I cannot find the names of this component of the fueling system and really would like to know there purpose.

The lever probably holds the flap closed. and the button pushes the flap open enough so the lever will not relatch.

I believe the level does assist in opening the door - however the button is parallel to the flap and I can push it in but do not observe anything happening. I found a short clip on you tube that shows what I am referring to. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NIoB3BMwL1M

OK I had it backwards. The lever that he is pushing actually pushes the flap open and the button holds the flap closed. When you pull the release handle inside the car it should pull the button in so it will release the flap.
