Rear end issues

Asked by May 30, 2016 at 09:42 AM about the 1998 Ford Expedition 4 Dr XLT 4WD SUV

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Got a 1998 4WD Ford Expedition, there is a weird
clicking sound coming from rear end (already
changed wheel bearings, & brakes) and when I
stop the rear tires keep going like I'm still driving,
but only for a short period.  It's worse in 4WD.

tires keep going?

Yes. Best way I know to describe it - it's as if I'm trying to smoke the tires but I'm at full stop on brake.

The clicking sound could be the limited slip clutches in the rear differential, did you put limited slip additive in when you replaced the bearings? the only other thing I can think of is the transmission's torque converter stall speed is too low or it is trying to stay in lockup. Does it do this at low speeds also?
