I have a 01 lincoln ls while driving today it
started putting as if is was gonna shut off
but never did... I thought maybe I needed oil
so I put 2 quarts in but I still have this
problem.. putting while picking up speed,
while at rest or slow g down

Did the mark on the dipstick indicate you needed the 2 quarts of oil? If not, you may have now overfilled your engine and should quickly drain out the excess - then start diagnosing the sputtering problem.
