ford escort zx2 battery good, car dead when trying to start

Did you check your cable connections? How do you know the battery is good, what is the voltage, check with a multimeter and post back some more details.

How about the timing belt? I had this problem once when I got my timing belt changed. Turned out that the mechanic had not placed the belt properly, and it had fallen off its rim so the vehicle wouldn't start at all. Had to tow it back to the same mechanic who fixed it and it worked.
