2018 Audi RS3 over revved in 1st gear?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I'm a new owner of a 2018 RS3. Soon after I just got the car and being unfamiliar, I tried to put the transmission into S and Dynamic, but instead of pulling the 'automatic transmission lever' directly back from D to S, I pulled it back and to the right and did not at first notice it went into M1 instead (manual mode). Then I drove off and gave it a moderate amount of gas and it was revving quite a bit until I realized it never got out of 1st gear. Did about 500 feet at about 30-40 mph, . If the car has a rpm limiter that would reassure me but unsure if it does and could there be potential engine damage? Is this a valid concern or should not worry? I don't see any signs of engine problems, can't tell if engine compression has been affected in any way, or any other problems.

I doubt there is a problem. Did you rev the engine into the red zone on the tachometer?

Thanks for getting back to me. It revved pretty loud but could not check the RPMs at the time as I concentrated on looking at my speed so not to go over the limit. I took for granted the RPMs would have changed by themselves as if in automatic, but as you know put it into manual unfortunately. Concerned it might have reached into redline.

If the engine runs OK and does not make any unusual noises and there are no pools of oil under the car I would not worry about it. Don't tell your dealer!

Ok great, none of the issues you mention or anything else. Won't worry anymore, but did reach out to dealer however, hmm. Still expect should be ok with dealer as no mechanical issues, and might be a good thing to run a diagnosis to just check out the engine for my peace of mind.

You can have it scanned for codes at your local auto parts store at no cost. If the check engine light is not on there are probably no codes to read.

You cannot over-rev the DQ500 transmission in the 2018 RS3 in 1st gear. Even in manual mode with the stick to the side, it will auto shift 1-2 before hitting red line. It will hold 1st gear to higher RPMs under moderate acceleration, but it eventually shift to 2nd if the RPMs climb too close to red line. The RS3 is made for high performance, so there's nothing bad about holding higher revs if it's not excessive or a cold engine. 2-7 will hit the rev limiter if not shifted while in full manual mode. The car will also not let the RPMs go below 900, so it will auto downshift as you slow down all the way back to 1st as you come to a stop. Going into manual from S is a more aggressive driving experience than from D. It does matter which it was on before moving the shifter to the side. Holding the down or up shift paddle for a couple seconds will auto select the lowest or highest gear possible at your current speed. So that's nice for quick acceleration from a higher gear, or cruising from a lower speed. Clicking the paddles while in auto D or S goes into a temporary manual mode that will allow you to shift until you stop using the paddles for a few seconds, or come to a stop. It will not allow you to hit the rev limiter, it will auto shift regardless of the gear. It cannot be engaged while stopped.

Thanks for further confirming there are no worries, and nice summary of how the transmission works in the car.
