Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My car makes a very loud grinding/rubbing
sound sometimes. If I tap my brakes the
noise stops but comes right back when I
release brake.  Get the noise on uneven
pavement also.  It is not a bearing noise
and it only happens when I am far away
from a garage or someone else to hear it

Can I assume you have rear brake drums? Might be the shoes contacting the drum as one of the springs might be broken, or the front pads might be worn if it's not the rear brakes. Have a local brake and muffler shop inspect your car for you.

Thank you for your quick response but I have disc brakes. The noise is in the same category of drum brakes gone bad. I have replaced all 4 rotors, brake pads, bearings (now hubs), ball joints. I'm at a loss.
