Does anyone know of issues with Ford Explorer roof rails detaching? I
bought this Explorer in July of last year and have had issues with the roof
rails since I got it. The top plastic pieces have been replaced by the
dealership twice and a few weeks ago the replaced the entire apparatus
(meaning the piece that attaches too the roof and the top plastic piece that
snaps onto it. The driver side rail started coming up again after going through
my local car wash. I'm really not sure what else the dealership can do since
replacing the entire thing didn't work. I'm starting to think it's a design issue...
What should my next course of action be? THANKS FOR ANY HELP!!

Make sure your dealership is elevating this problem to the regional service people. If the local folks can't fix it get the regional folks involved. The dealer should help you make the right contacts.

I have the exact same problem. Just bought a 2018 Explorer Sport ($54K) in October 2018 and it has been in the shop nonstop since (carpet wasn’t fastened securely and had shifted over enough so that there was a hole between the plastic mounding on the side and the frame floor, door rattles on 2 of the 4 doors, glovebox rattles, headliner and sunroof rattles, dashboard noises, loose clips in the drivers side seatbelt area, peeling back bumper guard, back seats not folding flat, and most recently a roof rail that keeps popping off). With only 8k miles on it, and at this price point, it’s absolutely unacceptable. I just want to be rid of this vehicle and I’m very unhappy with Fords quality. I will never purchase again. The dealer has only been able to partially assist with the dashboard (it still squeaks and rattles), the loose seatbelt clips, and one of the doors. I just got my truck back this morning from the dealer for the roof rail popping off. They said they took it apart and installed “updated clips”. Within two hours of having it home, the rail popped back off (nobody touched it). This will result in another call and another visit to the dealer. I’m unable to even snap it back in place as it just pops right back up again. Beyond disappointed and at a point where I want them to just take the vehicle back.

I have had 2 Explorers now and, other than this rail issue, I have been really happy with both of them. I had a person respond to a post I did on another board and they suggested looking into your state's lemon laws. Sounds like that would be a good option for you, given all of the troubles you are having. My dealership has been working with Ford and they have decided to epoxy the rail caps down. That is happening today, so it is yet to be seen whether this will fix my issue or not.

We have the same exact issue on 2017 Sport. We had replaced on warranty and I’d not make it through the day and off again. While I was at the dealer I walked to the new explorer sports on the lot and both had Mae issue on he new lot. I travel a lot. I have been to several dealers all over the US and have seen 2018 and 2019 explorers with this sane problem.

I have a 2018 Explorer Sport with the same issue. In fact, one rail came off completely in the car wash. I had to run inside the car wash to retrieve it. I went immediately to the ford dealer. They replaced them both. Unfortunately, they have come off twice since the new ones were put on. I called Ford customer service and they referred me back to the dealer. Does seem to be a bad design.

Mine too.....I have the 2017 Sport. Both are off again, so back to the shop for the 5th time!!! I am so done with this. And now had to have $6000 work of engine work done because the turbo boosters BOTH went bad, and had to be replaced, after noticing a lot of white smoke from the exhaust. I am just about ready to throw in the towel on Ford products after this and all the problems I had with my Mustang before I got this vehicle.

I have the same issue with my 2019 explorer xlt, I just bought in February. I went to the dealer and they told me they have never had or heard of this being an issue. The guy at the carwash suggested using silicone to secure it, or they offered to tape them every time I come through.

I have a 2018 XLT. The right rail has blown off twice in car wash. I ordered a new one to a tune of $147.36 my Explorer only has 4, 700 miles on it. I plan on gluing the Damn thing down. I didn't have time for time at dealership. Sad when u spend $45,000

My dealership used an epoxy to glue them down. So far this has worked. They haven’t come off in the last month or so, so I’m cautiously optimistic this will resolve my issue. Only time will tell I guess.

My problems didn't stop with my previous post. Just last week my engine started acting up- -revving for no good reason when I was initially taking off from a stop (sounded like it was in the wrong gear but I was not in manual mode, nor did I hit the paddle shifters). Add to that the electronics/tack randomly changing settings on me both on start up and while driving. And, the infotainment froze up multiple times to where I couldn't do anything with it. My final solution.... just traded it in for a Honda Pilot Elite and lost THOUSANDS of dollars given that I had put so much down on the Explorer this past October and still ended up with negative equity despite my trade being right where the market says it should be. I'd rather eat the money now than deal with that POS another day. Lesson learned. And never again will I purchase another Ford product. I've seen so many memes making fun of Ford... and now I get it. My favorite "Ford, at least they circled the problem".

My 2016 Ford Explorer Sport has the same issue. I was driving on the interstate last month and one of the caps blew off. Come to find out both of the rails had broken front clips when I purchased it used at a Ford dealership in Colorado. I took it to my local Ford dealership and they said they could not replace the rails even though my bumper to bumper warranty was still active due to this not qualifying as a manufacturing defect. I contacted Ford Motor Company Customer Service several times and they gave me the run-around and told me to go back to my dealer. After talking to my service manager at my local dealership and Ford Motor Company I came to the conclusion that they will not help with financial assistance in replacing these roof rails. I am going to epoxy the caps down. Not too happy about this!

Just left my 2018 Explorer XLT at the dealership (purchased 11 months ago). One of my rails apparently blew off in a carwash - I did not know it, and by the time I realized it, I was at home and there was no way to retrieve the part. Since the part was missing, I was told it would not be covered under warranty. Roughly $900 parts/labor to replace the whole system. Since the clips are broken, they can't replace just the rail cap. The service employee told me this is a "known" issue and he has seen it happen before. His advice - no car washes, only hand washes. Super ticked off, I've leased three Explorers prior to this one with no issues. This is the first vehicle I have outright purchased in 20+ years. Jumped on google to see if I am alone with this issue. Obviously not!

We have the same problem with our 2016 XLT. Lost them several times in a car wash. We got them back. We did lose one on the left side some where on the highway. Not under warranty. $285 to replace it. The other one could go at any time. Thinking of glueing it down.

I'm having the same problem with my 2017 Explorer as well. I've had mine replaced 4 times and I'm going on the 5th time now. I'm affair it's going to fly off while I'm on the freeway! This is a hazard to anyone driving near any explorer with the same issue.

Same problem here from the night we took delivery. been in the dealership for thesame roof rail issue more that 4 Times now. Since Nov 2018 till today the roof rail is still not fix. Dealer is not even calling us back anymore when we call to have it fix.

I have the same problem with my 2018 explorer sport. I’ve had new clips, new rails, and glued down by a body shop; all taken care of through my warranty with separate visits. The rails were glued down two months ago and they have started popping up again in the back. I will be taking it back to the dealership in 2 weeks, because that is the soonest I can get in. Ford needs to do a recall and fix the problem.

My 2016 ford explorer has the same issue. The dealership epoxied it down and has replaced the passenger side rail three times. Whatever force is removing them is strong because it broke the bond on the epoxy and the passenger side is lifting again. Very disappointing as these vehicles are not cheap. With all the other issues I have had with my vehicles since it was new, I wish I had never bought this vehicle. My guess is that the roof is a very large steel surface that expands in the sunlight and heat. That expansion twists the rails loose because they don't expand as much as the steel roof.

My 2019 sport is having the same issue Both sides were lifting, and my husband noticed. Then I went thru a car wash, I heard a weird noise and when I pulled out of the wash to vacuum the inside had noticed it laying inside the car wash. Haven't brought to the dealer yet, all I know is I better not be charged, my truck has only 3000 miles on it!!!

Everyone with roof rack problems please message for on FB or something 3 different dealerships said this very common so now I have to pay $700 to get the whole assembly replaced because I am out of warranty. This is a totally bad design and we shouldn't have to pay for it! They should issue a RECALL!

Sounds like we need a class action lawsuit. It seems Ford will not listen to us so maybe they will listen to Lawyers demanding money, since that is all they seem to care about, making cheap crap to maximize their profits.

I have the same issue with my 2018 Explorer Sport. The dealership has replaced the rails once already and now are not returning our phone calls. We will be taking it back, but reading all these posts, it is definitely a design issue. This was a expensive car!!

Just had a long conversation with Ford Manufacturing company Via FB messenger. Sent them all my information with links including this one to show that there is a real safety/ and design flaw when it comes to these rails. He said he was sending all my information to the regional manager to help get this resolved. So we will see

Same issue with my 2018 sport which has 6,000 miles. I used some 100% silicone adhesive caulking to glue them down. Just put some big dabs on each clip and snapped them back down. I then put some masking take over the top to hold it down for a few hours while the silicone dries. So far it has worked well.

My 2018 Explorer Sport recently has had both rails lift half way off. This is crazy! Ford needs to make a recall on this poor design. Can’t have all these customers experiencing the same thing and not make it right.

After runs to multiple dealerships and shops, I have found a solution to the roof rack problem. I too was having a problem with one of my roof rack moulding falling off. I took the vehicle to Ford and they told me there was nothing they could do. I was extremely frustrated and disappointed with Ford. After doing some research and speaking with an honest mechanic that lived near me, I decided to tackle the project myself. The problem is that the "wings" on the retainer run down and lose there ability to hold the molding down. I purchased 2 retainers from Ford. The old retainers slide out of the grove and the new ones slide right into place. It cost me 6$ per retainer and took all of 2 minutes to actually switch out. Go buy the retainers and do this yourself. It is an easy fix that you can do yourself. Problem solved.

I have been having the same problem with roof rails popping off my 2016 Explorer. One time they popped up while driving down the highway. We’ve had the rails replaced twice, and still having problems with the new set. Today I filed a safety complaint with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. They have received multiple complaints, but hasn’t risen to the level of having an investigation conducted. I suggest anyone with problems call the hotline and file a report. Perhaps an investigation will get conducted and lead to a recall and require a correction by Ford.

DDM7248, is there a specific number you called? I just want to make sure we all call the same number so our calls aren’t diluted across multiple numbers. We bought our certified, pre- owned ‘17 Sport w/29,500 miles all of nine days ago on Black Friday and we’ve had multiple issues already. Although the issues have been under warranty, it’s still a huge inconvenience to spend majority of a day at a service department with a toddler for each repair.

Dbish94 is right. I bought retainers from fordpartsgiant.com. Searched for part number FB5Z-7851050-A. I bought 4 at $2.99 a piece. Just installed them today. Took all of 4 minutes. Totally worth it. I needed up buying a handful more in the even this happens again.

An update on my 2016 Explorer Roof Rails I had the same retainer clips put on in September 2019, and they did not hold. Additionally, Ford has just come out this week with new guidance to use an epoxy to glue the rails. After the whole day in the shop allowing the epoxy to set, the front portion of both rails popped up just on my 5 mile drive home from the Ford shop. Obviously, not a viable solution. I’ll keep trying or just eventually trade-in the vehicle.

2019 FE Sport - SAME Issues..4K miles, been to dealer 3x... 1st "Fix" - Replaced with bigger clips 2nd "Fix" - Removed fully bottom & top rail replaced 3rd "Fix" - Applied TA 32 sealant silicone to BOTH Rails, all clips - Taped down 24hrs 3rd Fix was yesterday Wait & See now...

Same here with a 2017 XLT with 18k miles. Front rail is making clicking and whistling noises. Has not lifted off yet. Brought it to the dealer and they said the clips are on backorder (now I know why).

Absolutely would love to just remove them, but big job with holes left in the roof! These rails SUCK! I bought my 2018 Explorer XLT Sport in July 2018. Had rails fixed once and replaced after only a month and a half! Done! I am NOT dealing with this any longer! Afraid to go through the car wash! Plan is to trade it this weekend, but I really like my car and have no other issues with it. But this seems to be the only solution!

I happened upon this discussion while looking for cross bars for my 2018 xlt. Have not seen evidence of this issue, but was surprised when I realized that the rails were plastic covers over steel rails. One thing I'm not sure from the discussion is: whether it's the steel rails or just the plastic covers that are coming loose? My xlt came with 4 specially shaped eye-bolts that replace four trim fasteners and seem to be used for anchoring rope. Glad to be aware of this potential problem, although we've gone thru car wash a dozen times. I'll be following this discussion, to be sure. If the rails start coming off, I'll give them one chance to fix them; if they come off again, I'll plug the holes with silicone and find an after-market product. And report the issue to the NHSI and Insurance Institute.

I have a Ford Explorer 2016 and both of my rails pop off daily! I am not happy with how cheaply all of the newer models are made.

I just bought a new 2019 in April and I'm having the same issue. I'm taking it in again to get it repaired --- except this time they said there's a "Ford Fix" using silicone! Silicone is NOT a solution - it's more like a band-aid! Then what will happen when it's out of warranty? They'll want me to pay for a new "fix"? I'm paying a LOT of money for a brand new truck. Help! Same problem. Here car has 5k miles total. 2019 xlt and the things are falling off. They just popped off from being outside in the cold. The frost caused them to pop off. Im looking into the police intercepter delete kit to just get ride of the rails all together.

So I had the same problem on my new (to me) 2017 Sport. Given how flexible the cover is and what I know about how poorly epoxy's and silicone sealants would probably perform in this situation (weak in tension) especially given the expansion/contraction inherent in this piece, I went for the mechanical solution. I went to Lowe’s and bought black capped stainless steel screws (8x1), marked and drilled holes in between the vertical fins on the internal support, and screwed the caps down. It worked like a charm. I did this both at the front and back just to be safe. I probably could have gotten away with 2 screws, but 3 is always better! Call Ford customer service and ask them to escalate the problem. Their solution is to replace the clips and glue it down. We are out of warranty bu they fixed it with little convincing. Seems to have solved the problem. Lam fix but a fix none-the-less.

I just bought a 2018 Sport with 7400 miles a couple weeks ago and mine are already coming loose or were already that way. So far my dealer has attempted to fix them once, replaced the clips and re-attached the caps, and they immediately started popping back up. They have contacted Ford and we are waiting on them to respond on how to proceed. I'm not bringing my vehicle in a half dozen times to have this fixed over and over again. I've ordered the retainers and will attempt to fix them myself. If that doesn't work I'll take it to a body shop and have them fixed by a professional.

Replacing the entire assembly only worked for about a month - I'm guessing since the design itself is flawed, simply replacing it all doesn't help. The dealership finally epoxied them both down and they have been good ever since. So, that's what I recommend, glue them down.

I ended up filing a complaint on the NHTSA website, as this can become a safety hazard. Mine flew off while driving on the highway last year. Thank goodness there was no one else behind me, especially someone on a motorcycle. Here is the link to file a complaint. Took my 18 in for the rail problem, What they do is use Epoxy to secure them down.Had to wait 2hrs for it to bond. They no longer pop lose at the car wash.

Just had the same issue on my 2017. The answer is those clips mentioned above. My drover side rear rail was coming off and got completely taken off in the car wash. Went to Ford dealer, said there was nothing they could do, had to buy the entire rail kit for $423 plus tax. I found this thread, thank goodness, and ordered the clips online for $2.91 each plus shipping. I ordered extra just in case I needed a couple more. I literally change the one rear clip, $2.91 plus 3 min of my time, and it snapped back in perfectly with no wiggle at all. Thanks Dbish94, your answer saved me a ton of cash!

Everyone on here needs to file with the NHTSA here at https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/VehicleComplaint. Until this issue is raised as a safety concern there will not be a recall issued. They have documented communication with Ford and a "fix" has been agreed on as of December 09 2019. However, I have this "fix" and mine just blew off on the highway yesterday. If any of you have a case where the ejection of your roof rail struck a car or a pedestrian it would be evidence that this is in fact a safety concern and needs to be recalled and fixed.

I just noticed mine is missing on the driver's side this morning. Is it or is not covered by warranty?? If Ford has acknowledged the problem and issued and fix but not a recall, it is seems to me the part is defective and warranty should cover it

I just had my 2017 Ford Explorer Sport shipped from Houston to Central Washington, and the cap flew on in transit. The driver gave me $200 cash, which will replace the entire Left assembly (around $150 + $75 shipping which is a rip). But all I need is the plastic cap. You think if I go to my local Ford dealer they will just have the cap?

Same issue. Took my 16 Explorer to the dealership to have cross bars installed. Told the rails were faulty and I would need 1500 to replace. Then I went to my car and they left my rail dangling from the car! $100 diagnostic charge to break the rails worse! FORD IS CRAP!

same isue and now my antenna cover just fell off in the car wash. Also a torque converter replacement which failed so they had to put in a rebuilt transmission..... Nothing covered - lucky for me it is a company car. History of having 5 explorers and never had an issue until this lemon!!!

I bought a 2020 King Ranch Expedition in March and had this piece rip off two days ago while driving down the highway. 3,800 miles on an $80,000 SUV and I am currently waiting on a new front camera, running board motor in passenger side, and now this. Ridiculous!

sold my Explorer last Friday. 40k miles and the roof rack was popping off, alternator failed, drivers side carpet was falling off the side walls and getting caught under the brake pedal, window washer fluid line malfunction, and the frame was welded together incorrectly and made a loud popping noise when driving at low speeds. Ford refused to cover the cost of the repairs. I spent 1k last week on the Explorer and my mechanic literally told me to sell the vehicle while I still could. People, sell your Explorer and write corporate Ford a letter. I plan on never purchasing another Ford.

Does anyone know if adding Cross rails will stabilize the roof rails since the cross rails are somewhat screwed into it?

I had the extended warranty on my 2018 Sport. They replaced both sides three times as they kept popping off in car washes etc. Finally one blew off on I-5 about a month ago and I just ripped the other one off today as it was starting to chatter. This is ridiculous on a $55K car. I bought it new and had the issue near immediately. I am now looking for aftermarket solutions. This was my first Ford and will be my last. I have had many new cars and this is the worst experience I've had.

I am having the same problem with my 2019 XLT. It has been in the shop 8 times for the roof rails. They have replaced them 3 times and epoxied them the other times. I am going to look into the lemon law in my state to see if there is any recourse. I was going to trade it in but even with only 13000 miles on it, it’s worth less than I owe.

I purchased a new 2018 at the end of 2017 and have had them replaced already once and now waiting on back order for the whole assemblies to be replaced again. According to each of the separate dealers that I visited neither of them have heard of the problem which is a bunch of crap. However, by looking at these posts there are no fix's other than putting screws through your vehicle on the end caps which shouldn't have to be done on a new vehicle or silicone or glue to keep your parts together.!! I wonder how much glue is holding the rest of my vehicle together. Seems like it's time to make a report with the safety bureau.

Have same issue with my 2017 XLT. Had clips replaced multiple times but never lasted long. Last time told them I was just going to glue it down and was advised against that. Brought it in today and was told Ford has a new solution for it but the part isn’t in yet. After waiting several hours for my regular service to be done was told the part just came in. Guess what? It’s a glue but they’d have to keep my SUV overnight since it needs time to set. Gorilla Glue here I come!!

I actually just picked mine up yesterday after having the “solution” done. Didn’t work. Informed the owner of the dealership that I would be bringing the final notice in to enforce the lemon law. He is paying for a different design of roof racks out of pocket to keep me in the vehicle. Mine is a 2019 with very low mileage. I have paid about half of it off. I really don’t want to start over as I love my car. We will see what happens.

I am still having issues with Ford on the Roof Rails. The standard answer is replace the whole thing, oh but it will cost me 50% of the cost. Having had one replaced already and is now coming off again, I decided to go with the Brooks method. It seems to work so far. Thanks Brooks for the Idiot proof guide to fixing this, now on to harassing Ford :)

Brooks Here. 8 months later and not a single issue or 'loose screw.' It's interesting to me that the dealers have not come up with a mechanical solution similar to the one I worked out above. They have better access to fasteners than I do and could simply match the flat- head hex-screws that are already on the inside of the rails. No one would ever notice the additional screws. There is simply no acceptable 'glue' solution that will hold up to the heat/thaw/uplift forces that these pieces experience on the highway, or in the car wash in my case. There might be a double-stick-tape solution, but the inherent design of the piece limits this application, and I still think it would fail over the long term.

Brooks, I am amazed too and my conversations with Ford are ongoing. A side note I was talking with a new neighbor who was working on his truck and I explained what I had just done. He told me his wife had the same issue, but it was a lease so they just exchanged it back for something else. Just a shame Ford has let us down on this issue.

The glue doesn't work. Replacing them doesn't work. I took mine off. Tired of messing with them. Never another Ford. Should have kept my 2011 Explorer instead of trading for a 2019. Very disappointed.

I saw the recall notice on the FordPass app yesterday. It’s Field Service Action Number 20N11. I’m guessing it’s to replace all the caps and use a specific 3M glue. Whether it works or not is another question.

Had the "recall" performed...Same shit, different TSB...they are now saying its a dual epoxy...Such a joke..been 3 days and the rail is already loose

Same issue here on a 2019 Sport. Been like this for a while and went in for service twice. Both times, the detachments recurred almost immediately after each visit. Escalated to FMC since I consider this a safety hazard for others on the road as well as a liability for me. Their only advice is to go back to the dealer. Dealer states new rails are needed but are on backorder with no stock date in sight. Car is leased so I can't modify it without the risk of Ford Credit charges, otherwise the rails would have long been removed. The apathetic attitude from FMC towards this issue is truly intolerable.

I had this problem right after I got my 2018 Ford Explorer. Took it back to the dealer they fix it but late in 2020 into January 2021, it kept popping up at the front and the back end and I kept pushing it back down until February when I got the recall notice from ford Motor company. I tried to push it back down and it just pop back up. I took it back to the dealer with the letter from Ford requesting them to remove the rails from my roof as I did not want it to snap /break off while I was driving and hit the car behind me. I am still waiting for the parts to arrive at the dealership so that I can go back out and have them replace it with the new parts and put the rail back on my roof. I keep calling to find out if it has come in and get the song and dance with them. I will be going out there on Tuesday to get to the bottom of this. I'm sick and tired of waiting and want the rails put back on the roof.

I’m not sure what they did to mine, but they have finally got them to stay on. I do know they installed a completely new rail system and caps. It’s been 6 months and they are still holding on.

There’s a more recent recall notice that came out in may that supersedes the from from January. Instead of the glue, the new fix is to actually insert pins into the rail system. Look for Ford recall number 21S22

Recall date 2021-05-04 Recall no. 21V316000 Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2016-2019 Explorer vehicles. The retention pins could loosen and allow the roof rail covers to detach from the vehicle.

My car went in for a complete roof rail replacement 3 months ago. Based on the history of my service as well as the recall's issued, this was approved by Ford Motor Company. As of today, one of the rails is becoming detached again. The Customer Experience Specialist advised that there is still no viable solution to this defect on the Ford side, and that the only recourse at this point is to apply for a Buyback.
