When car is in overdrive, the transmissions jumps in and out of gear - any guidance?
The RPM gauge as well as the speedometer hand has stopped working--what is my problem?

http://www.aa1car.com/library/transmission_ford_ax4s.htm ..hopefully it is not the O/D shift solenoid, it's internal in the transmission. This is specific to 1999 Taurus click to see image

But how that could be related to your tachometer and speedometer is giving me fits, they are not 'fed' from the same place, here is solenoid

It's 'hunting' for the right gear and could be the common denominator right there, the tach not supplying the right information to O/D...via PCM....still looking

These cars have so many transmission problems it is usually the first place mechanics go. If speedometer has failed or works/Fails/works ect problem could be the vehicle speed sensor. check do you have a check engine light read code may indicate issue. try the cruise control, if it is jerky or not working, supports a vss replacement. Vehicle speed sensor indicators: 1. Speedometer is intermittent or jerky(main indicator) 2. 1 exists and Vill not engage overdrive. 3. 1 exists and Cruiser control jerky or not working 4. 1 exists and stays in first gear the sometimes stiff shift into second/third If you buy one get it with the plastic gear start fresh it can be ordered without but you have a 10 to 15 year old car spend $5 more for a VSS with Gear. Smart money. Expect to pay about 40 to 75 to have mechanic install. NOTE: If the plastic gear completely fails it may damage internal gears connecting the sensor gear to the output shaft. if this happens repair is 200 to 400.
