Starter issues

Asked by Apr 16, 2017 at 01:49 AM about the 1972 Chevrolet C/K 10 Cheyenne Super

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Replaced starter with a smaller starter to make room for new shorty
headers. Ever since I've had issues. If I don't leave a trickle charger on the
battery it just does one click when I turn the key and won't start. I have
bought higher cranking amp battery, attached ground wire to starter and
frame, had starter tested. Starts most times with trickle charge, but dare to
leave and get gas. 50/50 chance it starts again with a jump. Where is
voltage or amps being pulled from? Are the teeth lining up with my flywheel
from that new starter? I'm not too handy as a mechanic anyways, but this is
frustrating trying to fix. I've even checked the ignition wire and changed the
connector. Worked for one start.

Have you load tested the battery when it refuses to start? Does everything go completely dead when it won't start (lights, horn, wipers, etc.)? Sounds like a bad electrical connection with the battery cables or a defective starter. If everything goes dead it's a bad battery cable connection. Either positive (+) or ground (-). If everything stays on, headlights nice and bright, etc., then I'd suspect the starter to be defective. HTH. -Jim
