Could I rebuild my 283 with only a line hone, crank bearings, cam and cam
bushings, rod bearings and piston rings? Cylinder bore and pistons look
good. Crank has been turned to "0.20. I wanted to go from 0.30 to 0.40
pistons but can't afford them.
You need to check the cylinder taper and for a lip at the top of the cylinders if it is worn too far you will have to have it bored, you can cut off the lip if it isn't too deep, but if it is then you will still have to bore it, but only bore it as much as it needs, the less the better, if it doesn't need boring then make sure you hone it properly, get a good crosshatch pattern so the new rings will seat, make sure you plasti-gauge all the bearings, rods and mains for proper clearances, you don't want it too tight or it will spin a bearing or too loose or you will have a rod knock, you will need a special tool to install cam bearings, measure the bore of the cam journals in the block you don't want find out after the rebuild that you have a egg shaped journal, just make sure you install them correctly and use plenty of cam break in lube, get a good engine overhaul gasket set.
