can I replace an automatic transmission in an '05 rio without pulling the engine?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

MY son's transmission will not shift into the high gear (either 3rd or 4th) and overdrive.  We tried just putting in new transmission fluid but I think we are faced with a new transmission.  It has about 120,000 miles on it.  Can it be replaced by pulling the wheel and doing it from that direction?  Thanks.

Thanks. I thought it looked like I could but was not sure. In the long run I think this would be better than pulling the whole thing out. More time than money for this project.

you've got to be good with a wrench and clean work area~ I'd have to meditate, and get into "the zone" if I were to undertake something like this...not impossible, but difficult~ I remember single handedly rescuing an Isuzu impulse that had coolant in the oil jacket~ good times....you're in for good times if you pull this one off alright~ couple of dozen bolts...take pictures~

Thanks for the suggestion. I certainly will keep it in mind. Not there yet. We are still gathering information.
