Low Oil Damage to Pistons or Rings

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Due to a hole that was put through the valve cover on my 2008 Sprinter Van
excessive oil was lost and I'm now being told that the rings or pistons are
damaged and I need an engine replacement. Could excessively low oil (5-7
quarts) have caused damage to the rings or pistons? Also, if something
metal got under the valve cover could this have caused the damage? The
van seemed to be running fine before this.

Oil is the life blood of your engine. This will be an expensive repair.

We took the van to a shop and they were welding a crack on the valve cover and blew a hole in the cover that was about the size of a quarter. They released it back to us without fixing that hole and we drove it around 1200 miles (sensor's didn't kick), then the van sat for almost a month and we found the oil leaking so took it back to the shop which is when we found out about the hole in the valve cover. Now it's using excessive oil and going into limp mode. It's using approx. 1 1/2 quarts of oil in 40-50 miles.
