Asked by May 21, 2016 at 02:45 PM about the 1997 Jeep Wrangler SE

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Is there any way to test the brake booster to
see if it is bad other than just replacing it
with a new one

When a booster goes bad usually you have a very hard pedal, you can hear a vacuum leak usually down where the brake rod comes through the firewall, or it will try to throw you through the windshield if you just lightly touch the brake pedal. What braking problem are you experiencing?

At first you may have brakes but then the pedal will hit the floor an no brakes. Or when holding on the brakes the pedal will slowly go to the floor like it's losing pressure

That sounds more like a failing brake master cylinder and not a booster. But price it both ways, sometimes a complete unit is only a few dollars more than just a master cylinder. Just make sure you bench bleed it really good before putting it on.

Put your foot on the brake and start the engine. If the pedal goes down a 1/2 inch or so when the engine starts the booster is likely okay.

Ok thanks for the help. I appreciate it.
