How do I get my 2000 Wrangler Sahara out of 4wd?

Asked by May 14, 2015 at 01:40 PM about the 2000 Jeep Wrangler Sahara

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

i bought the car almost a year ago and i hadn't had to use the 4wd until this past
weekend... i got it into 4wd just fine, and i thought that i had gotten it out of 4wd just
fine, but now my part time light is on and the steering wheel shakes and moves on it
own when i turn too much, and just recently, while trying to get it out of 4wd, when i go
too fast (like 10mph), this loud noise (like a bunch of gears shifting and hitting each
other).  i have only put it into 4hi, but when i have read up on this noise is sounds like i
am in 4low.  can someone please help me? it is a manual.

The 4WD system maybe running in a bind due to inactivity, try jacking up all 4 wheels to take the load off and then try getting it out of 4WD, if it comes out then then you need to check the fluids for any metal particulates, if the fluids are clear then change then with Jeep approved fluids only. If you do find metal then the damage is done so put the fluid back in and have it repaired. Remember you are supposed to use the 4WD at least once a month on a dirt road to allow for wheel slippage.
