2003 Library 3.7 Cooling Fan Issue
Vehicle has 86.4k miles and over heated for first time. No codes came up at
any time before, during over heating or while checking engine after. Using
Actron CP9185 Elite Pro Scanner for all testing. Back flushed entire system and
changed T-stat, Rad cap and Water pump was spinning too easy so out the
door it went. Checked CTS cold with air temp of 73 deg and read 12k ohms, hot
at 200 deg and 800 ohms. Fan motor is .4 ohms with a load of 31.25A, fan
relay was showing strange reading so that was replaced. Problem is fan will
not turn on, temp went to 216 deg with no fan, turn on AC with 9.5v and temp
pulls down to 200 deg with no problem. There is 12.5v anywhere I check. Help,
216 degrees isn't very hot at all. 260 is hot. The fan won't turn on until much higher than thermostat opening temperature (remember that the thermostat is for MINIMUM operating temperature) - has nothing to do with cooling a hot motor. It maintains operating temperature in cold climate and assists in cold engine warm-up. 31.25A is a HUGE amperage draw for the fan. HUGE! - The vehicle only requires an electric fan for cooling the engine when the vehicle is stationary - anything above about 30 MPH causes sufficient air flow across the radiator so, having stated: that, when and how badly is you vehicle overheating? I'm willing to bet that your fan has failed.
