2003 jeep liberty renegade. Sometimes, it actually starts. Most of the time, however, I get cranking with no start and error code P0340.

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Things that help:
1. Disconnecting negative battery
lead. Works some of the time.
2. Disconnecting ECM. Works more
often than disconnecting the battery.
3. Waiting. If it won't start now, I can
come back several hours later and it
starts like a champ.

What I'm not understanding is the
fact that if the car starts, it runs well.
I would think a camshaft sensor
circuit issue would affect engine
performance, especially on
acceleration or on hills. The car has
stalled only twice while driving, and
both times restarted right away or
within about 2-3 minutes.

I have new spark plugs, battery
voltage is 12.38 V, fuel pressure on
the rail, clean air intake, new oil.
75000 miles on car. There is
evidence of a past battery explosion,
and I'm afraid that acid might have
corroded the wires going into the
ECM.

There ya go. P0340 is a cam position sensor code. A faulty one will prevent your Jeep from starting when warm. Swap it out!
