I have an 05 Jeep Wrangler sport. It broke a strap and spun the u joint, rear axle makes noise but does not lock up with shaft unhooked, but locks up when attached. What are the possible issues?

Rear end overhaul time, don't drive it if at all possible, if the pinion walks up on the ring gear it could crack the housing then your out an entire rear end.

Will I need new axle shafts too or just ring and pinion
