why does my compressor come on and off when the heat is on in my 05 liberty is this normal?

my compressor in my 05 liberty comes on and off when the heat is on i dont know why, i thought it onley comes on when the aircondi is on can any one tell me if this is normal.

My Jeep does the same thing, it is normal, the compressor cycles to dry the air during winter operations to help with fogging of the windows, the only spot that my compressor doesn't cycle is in the floor mode and on manual setting, if on auto it will cycle. HTH
