2005 Jeep Liberty is blowing only cold air from heater and occasionally the engine runs too hot. I put coolant in.

Asked by Feb 20, 2015 at 12:19 PM about the 2005 Jeep Liberty Limited 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

About two months ago, I noticed the heat would only work if I was driving fast on the
highway and would quit working in the city.  No biggie cause I live in the south, but
now it is freezing and even on highway the heater only blows cold, but every once in
awhile the engine temp gauge will spike to overheating.  Never smells like it is
overheating and will often go right back down within a minute or two.  I am very handy
and would prefer to fix this myself.  I just don't know where to start.  I changed out the
cylinders and plugs on same vehicle, so I am certain unless it involves disassembling
the whole damn engine, I can handle it.

this is classic of low fluid. check your coolant level first. if it is low, fill it and it should operate normally. continue to check the fluid periodically, if you are losing it consistently then there is another problem.

I have checked fluid and filled. Still is blowing cold.

If there are no leaks try a new thermostat
