I just bought a new Mini Cooper SD and I am getting a burning smell

Asked by Guru9372T Jul 29, 2017 at 11:07 AM about the 2017 MINI Cooper S 2-Door Hatchback FWD

Question type: General

I bought a Mini Cooper SD about 4 weeks ago and suddenly I am getting a
burning smell coming from the rear exhaust area. When I drive off the smell
disappears. It comes back again when I am parked at the roadside and idling. I
was wondering if it is anything to do with the particulate filter? Any
suggestions?

I've had a few brand new cars that have done that.. keep driving it or take it to the dealership and let them look at it.... probably nothing, especially from the muffler area.. engines generate a lot of heat and there's filters back there. New components just breaking in. Your car is under warranty....no big deal here...

Many thanks, I think you maybe right about the new car thing. As you say its under warranty so I will get them to take a look at it

Let it warm up to operating temp on a flat surface. If you can get it up on jack stands or ramps, all the better. turn off the car. Grab a flash light and take a peak to see if any shielding is touching the exhaust, or if the muffler hangers are in any way compromised. Another good tool is a digital IR thermometer. You can use it to look at various spots under the car and note where there maybe an unusual hot spot.

Strangely enough the problem seems to have disappeared now. I have taken it for a run about six times and its not happening anymore. So all seems to be well. Thanks everyone for your reponses on this.
