99 ford escort bad engine noises

my 99 ford escort se is making a tapping or ticking noise when idling or driving slow... it goes away when im driving at regular speeds,but if i try to pic up speed or am sitting still revving the engine i hear like a grinding sound and then the engine kicks in...also sometimes when starting the car there is a clunking sound.....im a single dad and this is my only vehicle i dont have money to buy another or rebuild an engine....so what am i looking at and what hope do i have?

From your description, I'd say your either low on oil, or your engine is about to give up the ghost. Lets hope it's low on oil.
