Will the alternator out of a 92 Ford Escort hatchback work
in my 99 Escort?

It will not. Usually a 1998 to 2003 Escort alternator will swap over. Depending on your engine and or options, your car has either a 75amp or a 95amp alternator. You need the right one. Buy a remanufactured one at your local auto parts store. About a $100.
