Your Escort should have a rack and pinion steering setup. Idler arms are used in older rear Wheel drive cars. So sounds like something is broken in your front suspension, balljoint, or tierod end. compromising your alignment. Do not drive the car till you get it fixed, it is very unsafe for you and other drivers and pedestrians.
