First check the terminals and the postive cable on the battery. I have a taurus also and I've had to replace the positive terminal a couple of times. If fine, I would take the battery to autozone and have it tested for free. If the battery is fine ask them to test the altanator while your there.

Yup, if the battery light is on, your alternator is always suspect. It probably isn't charging and draining your battery. When the battery is low, sometimes the car will shut off. If you get the car started put a voltmeter across the battery terminals and you should be seeing 14V with the car running, that tells you the alternator is working properly. IF it isn't , time for a new alternator. If it is 14V, then you need to have your battery charged or replaced. Check your cables as well like geno mentioned.

the other day when i was driving my car the battery light came on then it went off. it was flashing then it would go off for a little while. could it be the alternator or the battery? i have had my battery for six years.i drive a 2001 ford taurus.
