2017 911 Targa Roof Thoughts

Asked by PhDtoBe May 29, 2019 at 12:54 PM about the 2017 Porsche 911 Targa 4 Cabriolet AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hi - looking at CPO 2017 911s and debating between a 4S and a Targa. I love
the look of the Targa, but I am concerned about the potential wear on the
Targa top after reading reports of squeaks, creaks and rattles. Any thoughts
out there on Targa tops? It will be my first Porsche, intended to be used daily
for short local driving. Also, as a CPO, it’ll come with a nice warranty...

I have a 997 targa 4s and have zero issues and complaints. Not sure about the 991 or 992 targa top system. 4S means you are glued to the ground.

Probably too late for the OP, but I've owned my '17 Targa 4S for two years, bought it used and next month the warranty runs out. I drive the car at least every other day and rarely with the top up. If I stop somewhere and cannot see the car I'll put the top up and then bring it down again before I leave. Needless to say, I run the "magic trick" on a regular basis. Today I took the car to the dealer because the top would not open after a trip down to the beach. The message was "top inoperative, take in for service". They found that Porsche had issued a SB if the message happened and all it needed was an adjustment and lube. Drove it home with the top down. At the end of the day, it's like owning a cab, at some point you will have top issues. That said, a Targa is hardly a cab--there is no substitute, you know.
