Is there a simple inexpensive fix or will the transmission have to be rebuilt?

My truck will not shift into 2nd or 3rd gear when starting out. It will go into reverse, and I can manually shift into 1st gear, but it will not shift when put into "D". The transmission had a leak where the drive shaft exits the transmission body and I had it repaired 2 months ago. I assumed it was fixed, but later found that there was no fluid showing on the dip stick.when it suddenly wouldn't shift. I filled it with fluid, but to no avail.The parts apparently seized or something. Could it be a shift solenoid? I had flushed the transmission and changed the filter about 6 months ago.

No fluid on the dipstick is a bad sign, seems you might have overheated/burned the clutches in the transmission. Your options are to have it rebuilt, or replaced with a used one.
