1998 Chevy P/U fires but won't start

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 1998 Chevy 1500 p/u with the 5.0 litre engine. It became very hard
to start, especially when cold(sitting for long periods of time). I took it to a
mechanic and was told it was the timing chain. Spent $1200 letting them
replace the timing chain and it still wont start after sitting overnight. Replaced
the spider injection system myself and thought I had the issue solved, but it
still ran rough once cranked. I broke the pcv valve hose while installing the
injection system. Replace the assembly with a new one and now it runs great
once you get it cranked. However, getting it cranked is next to impossible.
Turns over and fires like it wants to start, but just won’t quite start. The
mechanic that replaced the timing chain says there is a “wetting” issue,
whatever that means. Once the truck has been cranked it runs great! No
misses, no hesitations and fires back up with just a bump of the key. I am at
a loss for what could be wrong!

In the past have seen service bulletin about poppet valves sticking om that spider system. after vehicle sits overnight, hard to start in the morning. Once you get it started, works fine the rest of the day. If you replaced everything on that system, that shouldn't be the problem? The fuel pressure spec 60--66 psi, key on engine off, if I remember correctly.

Sounds like the fuel system is losing pressure when it sits. My 03 S10 Pick Up has been doing that for years. Try this, turn the ignition key on but don't try to start it. Wait about 5 seconds. Turn the key off then immediately start the engine. If it fires right up, that's what is going on. There's a check valve in the fuel system that's supposed to keep the fuel system pressurized for long periods after the engine is shut off. On a lot of GMs it's part of the fuel pump assembly. Hope that helps! Jim

Hey Jim! Thanks for the input. I have tried this method. I have also tried turning the key on and of 4 to 5 times, listening for the fuel pump to come on and then cranking it. No luck. It fires, but will not start. No difference between performing this operation and not performing it.

You're welcome. Glad to help! The other thing that comes to mind is a bad coolant temperature sensor. If the resistance value has shifted in the sensor you may not be getting the right air to fuel mixture for a cold start. Kinda like in the old days if you tried starting the engine with the choke off. Hope that helps! Jim

Hey Jim! Thanks for taking the time to reply. So, you mentioned the coolant temperature sensor and someone on another forum thought the same thing. I never in a million years would have thought this. But, picked up a new sensor last night and installed it this morning and.....BOOM! Fired right up this morning! Thank you for sharing your knowledge! I can't tell you how much I appreciate it!
