Engine oil level
Have a 2000 k2500 HD. I check the oil in the
morning. No oil on the dipstick. So I add oil
thinking that oil us low. I add 2 quartets of engine
oil. I check the oil leval and it is good. Start the
truck up and let it run for a little bit. Shut it off and
let it sit for ten minutes. Recheck the oil larval and
it is 2 Quartets over full. Is there a check valve that
is not letting the oil flow back into the pan? There
are no oil leaks and no engine noise. It has 200+
miles!! I am puzzled!!
No, there is no check that blocks oil returning to the pan, I have seen badly sludged up engines hold oil up in the valve covers but it starts to blow oil smoke and runs out the breather tubes when that happens. Is it possible that you misread the dipstick? Did you do the old double dip thing before making the decision on adding oil? On one of my old rigs I finally painted the end of the dipstick with epoxy white paint cause I could not tell exactly where the oil was with out feeling it with my finger, especially just after it was changed and clean.
