Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I purchased a used 2004 i35 and when I drove it the next day it would
move over to left some while driving took it to shop and they said i"m very
lucky it didn't fall down on me and then told me that the axle is broken and
the tie rods needed to be replaced.  now the women i brought it from gave
me the paperwork showing that she got the alignment done maybe 7 mos
before is it possible for this to happen and how much should the repairs
cost?

Susan- wow! This happened one day after you purchased your car? Did you purchase the car from a used car dealer or private party? Something this UNSAFE should, in my opinion, needed disclosure. http://repairpal.com/estimator/infiniti/i35/front-axle-shaft- replacement-cost

Didn't the shop quote you a price to repair? To replace one axle and one tie rod end, labor and parts will run anywhere between $300- $900. I'd replace tie rod ends on both sides if it were me. You will need an alignment too since the tie-rod ends are coming off.

I purchased the car from a private owner and yes, this happened the next day. the car has 158,666 mikes on it. the shop i took it to quoted me a price $999.00.

the owner showed gave me paper work showing she got alignment done last year. so tom what do you think it should cost to get all of what you said done?

Once parts are replaced, alignments need to be performed, so it doesn't matter that it was done 7 months ago. So the axle probably broke in-between that time as most shops won't align a car with something worn or broken. The quote of $999 is in upper cost of my ballpark #. I would try a couple other shops and see what they say.

They are charging for $161.34 for axle shafts assembly for left front axle, $161.34 for both outer tie rod ends includes toe in, $107.96 for stabilizer bar control link both, $87.33 five wheel alignment. $507.57 for labor and $405.62 for parts. What do you think 96 that Tom?

All the prices for the parts are marked up but the shop needs to make money somewhere. The labor is probably book value and wheel alignment is a fair price. Like I mentioned, get quotes from other shops if you want to save money.

Thank you!
