my 1988 ford crown vic does not switch gears at 45 miles per hr
when i get up to 45 mph the car rpms very high. it doesnt switch gear after that.
the car has a strong take off. it feel like my over drive is gone
Sounds like an issue with the converter, when is the last time you did an entire flush of the system.
The overdrive should kick in at or around 45 mph with a light throttle but the RPM's should not be really high, maybe around 2 grand, if it's higher than that you may have lost 3rd and overdrive and quite possibly lockup too. I would definitely have a trany shop take a look at it while it is still somewhat drive able, just stay off the higher speed roads, try not too exceed 35 until you get it looked at. It could just be stuck solenoids.
