Is is the transmission or not?

My son broke his front cv axle, damaged control arm, etc.  I raised the front
end up and removed the broken cv axle.  Then I wanted to check the
transmission so while it was still on jacks I started it up and put into to drive
and noticed that the opposite wheel wouldn’t turn after putting on some gas.  
Is this normal or is the transmission damaged also?
