gas and oil in my air filter. whats causing this?

changing my air filter on my 2000 ford focus.  found a yellow substance with a gas smell and looks like oil on the air filter.  whats causing this?  also the substance is in the air filter compartment that holds the air filter.

You might be getting blow-by of oil. Change your PCV valve and clean up the oil and gook. Since it is yellow, I assume you are driving very short trips not allowing the motor to fully warm up.
